Pronunciation Sound Key and Guide
Grammatical definitions often used in
describing root derivatives:
ablative: of, related to, or being a grammatical case
indicating separation, direction away from, sometimes manner
or agency, and the object of certain verbs. [Latin (ablātus),
carried away]
accusative: of, relating to, or being the case of a
noun, pronoun, adjective, or participle that is the direct
object of a verb or the object of certain prepositions.

genitive: of, relating to, or being a case
that expresses possession, measurement, or source; of or
related to an affix or a construction, such as a
prepositional phrase, characteristic of the genitive case,
[Latin (gignere), to beget, see root genæ-]
imperative: of, relating to, or constituting the mood
that expresses a command or request; instinctive
compilation, Latin (imperāre)
to command, see emperor]
neuter: neither masculine or feminine; neither active
or passive; intransitive; see roots ne and
kwo-
participle: the case most often in English where a
verb can function optionally as an adjective, as in the past
participle baked, in the passive sense, the
noodles were baked too long. Originally derived
expressions include, concerning, considering, failing,

transitive: expressing an action that is carried from
the subject to the object; requiring a direct object to
complete meaning; used of verb construction, [Latin (trānsīre),
