Etymology, etymologize (verb), etymologist (noun),
etymological (adjective), etymologically (adverb),
etymon (noun)
Etymology is the origin and historical development of a
linguistic form as shown by determining its basic elements,
earliest known use, and changes in form and meaning, traces its
transmission from one language to another, identifying its
cognates in other languages, and
reconstructing its ancestral form where possible.
This is the branch of linguistics that deals with etymologies.
To trace and state is to etymologize as a specialist
would understand as an etymologist. The etymon is
considered an earlier form of a word in the same language.
The love of words and their sounds that result in communication
is a mystery in the mind. In this diary, I occasionally discuss
etymology. There are however websites with more information
about etymologies.
